Sensational Soirees: MOMosa Brunch

Happy Saturday! The weather is yucky today here in DC, but despite the dreary weather I'm determined to have a wonderful Mother's Day weekend.

In fact, I'm enjoying watching my little girl at her dance class (in between typing this post), which I do every Saturday morning and the smile on her face melts my heart! I would typically also be at my son's football game too, but the rain rained on that parade. Being a mompreneur works well for me because of balance and the village who helps me manage motherhood and entrepreneurship! So this Mother's Day weekend, I'm celebrating being my own kind of superwoman, and rocking out motherhood.

mothers day brunch

Speaking of balance, last Saturday I not only was there for Cam's game and Cassidy's class, but I also designed a sensational soiree that was dedicated to celebrating fellow moms! This mommies and mimosas brunch event was truly special and beautiful. The fabulous event hostess, who is also one of my dear friends, really wanted to make sure all the ladies were treated to an enjoyable, kid-free afternoon, so with my help along with a private chef, we collectively got the job done. The event was held at her home, and I had so much fun transforming her living room with the help of Select Event Rentals.

The black, gold and hot pink color palette was the perfect mix of bold and feminine for this ladies soiree. I decked the tables out in black sequin linens, gold rimmed china, gold flatware, gold rimmed stemware and of course beautiful florals. The invited guests loved the decor, and couldn't stop raving about the delicious brunch prepared by Victory Chef, which included shrimp and grits, omelettes, breakfast potatoes, collard greens, fried chicken and french toast. You would think after such a yummy meal that we'd be in a food coma, but quite the contrary. We enjoyed conversing, connecting, encouraging and laughing with one another literally for hours! As moms, we truly need those times to just share and enjoy the company of others moms who get it, so this event was definitely a success.

Special thanks to my dear friend Taneka for hiring me to design this wonderful event, Select Event Group for the fabulous rentals, and Victory Chef for the wonderful meal!

How are you celebrating Mother's Day this weekend?! Share in the comments below. In addition to spending time with my mom, children and family, this weekend, I'll also be thinking of and praying for all of those whose moms and/or children are in heaven, that God's love will be with you in an extra special way.

Sensationally yours,

Shalyce

Sensational Soirees: Tropical Bridal Shower

When a fabulous bride is about to say I do in Punta Cana, what better way to celebrate her upcoming nuptials than with a tropical themed bridal shower!

Last month I had the pleasure of assisting the most thoughtful wedding party, as they prepared to shower their good friend with lots of love and a bright and fun soiree! From brunch meetings with the amazing maid of honor to phone calls discussing details, working with these ladies was a joy, and the bride is one lucky lady to have friends like them. Not to mention, the bride has the sweetest personality, so all around I enjoyed being apart of this special event.

This theme was the perfect way to get guests excited for the Dominican Republic, and for those who won't be able to make the trip, a chance to get a taste of paradise. Designing this soiree was a lot of fun and I put my floral skills into action by whipping up beautiful tropical arrangements that added so much flair to the room. There were so many elements of the day that I loved - from the tiki bar, to the delicious food from Porch Catering, to a fun tropical twist on the traditional Toilet Paper Bride game, and of course the pineapple and palm details throughout the signage and decor. But best of all was seeing the bride get teary eyed as she walked into the shower! It's always so rewarding to know the work that you do is valuable and to work with a great group of people. Check out more details from this fun soiree, captured by Kenneth Green for CMP:

I Heart #IntriguedExperience

We all know Thursdays are synonymous in the social world with sharing past memories and events, with the hashtag #TBT. Well 3 months ago (I know, doesn't really qualify for a true throwback), I had the most amazing time attending the Intrigued Experience, hosted by Sarah Campbell of Intrigue Designs. This 3 day, hands-on floral and design conference essentially propelled me to chase my dreams even more, and I'm excited to share a few key takeaways with you today. Plus, tons of eye candy captured by Madison Short Photography...the gorgeous flowers and attention to detail were insane throughout the conference!

It's funny because I went to the conference with the expectation to further explore my new found love for floral design and how it could enhance my business, but left gaining so much more than that. The hands-on floral training was extremely valuable and mind blowing, but I think the business education and new relationships I built were just as amazing if not more. I was honored to receive a partial scholarship to attend the conference, and I remember feeling so humbled and excited when I received the note from Sarah, the owner of Intrigue Designs. It turns out, Sarah started her career in event planning, and later found that floral design was her true calling. Sarah's inspiring journey, as well as the insights of the other conference speakers and panelists were all so motivating, and reaffirmed that I made the right decision to invest in my education by attending this conference.

The Intrigued Experience brought together florists, wedding and event planners, photographers and other creatives from all over, all in the name of education and community. We gathered at the beautiful Chesapeake Bay Beach Club and The Inn at the Chesapeake Bay Beach Club; talk about beautiful and accommodating! The hands-on floral workshops were better than I could've imagined! I learned everything from creating a floral chandelier to botanical jewelry to floral crowns and so much more. The floral industry leaders who led each of the workshops were so giving of their knowledge and expertise, not to mention we had so much fun, too! The business education sessions were awesome as well, and a few things that really resonated with me were:

  • Jamie Kutchman Wynne, owner of Marigold and Grey, encouraged us to do client gifting thoughtfully and systematically, along with describing our brand in 3 words. She was responsible for putting together all of the amazing swag at the conference, to include the cutest hard bound book where we could write notes.
  • Natalie Franke, co-founder of the Rising Tide Society and international wedding photographer, shared tips on rocking social media, to include reaching millennials by being authentic and viewing social media as a micro blog.
  • During the planner's panel, which I naturally loved, they reminded the fellow event planners in the room to take care of our vendors and they in turn will take care of us. We are all in this to win in business and for our clients!
  • Krista and Davey Jones, co-founders of the Rising Tide Society and film photographers, shared that branding is how you make people feel and encouraged us to always be ourselves.
  • Mandy Majerik, owner of Hot House Design Studio in Birmingham, reinforced the importance of charging your worth and educating the client throughout the process. She also encouraged us not to compare our beginnings to someone else's middle.

When I wasn't crafting beautiful floral arrangements or learning new ways to better my business, I was having the best time with my conference roomies, Shaunda of E'magine Wedding and Events based in Winston Salem, NC and Uche of Designs by Oochay based in Maryland. In addition to these fab ladies, I truly enjoyed getting to know so many of the ladies, several of which were my friends on social media, so finally connecting in person was even better. In my earlier years, introducing myself to others wasn't always my strong suit, but becoming a business owner completely changed that. Whether you are an introvert or not, I encourage you to make the most of networking and building new "friendor" relationships. Each attendee was gifted a pen pal set, so I can't wait to mail "hey, what's new" notes to my new gal pals.

To make 3 amazing days short, I had the best time at the Intrigued Experience, and I'm excited to attend more amazing conferences later this year. If you are a florist, planner or other creative in the wedding industry, I highly recommend attending this yearly conference and you can find out more details here. Share in the comments section what you love most about attending in-person conferences, and enjoy more photos all taken by Madison Short Photography.

Sensationally yours,

Shalyce

Happy Tuesday! If you love flowers and gorgeous styling, then today's recap is for you. Special thanks to Photos by Sarah Beth for all the beautiful pictures shared today. Naturally, as a wedding and event planner I'm drawn to beautiful floral arrangements, and I'm so inspired by great floral designers like Sarah Campbell of Intrigue Designs based in Annapolis, Maryland. Over the past year I've taken some time to learn the basics of floral design, and I have developed such a love for it!

I had the pleasure of attending the Annapolis Intrigue Tour workshop, hosted by Intrigue Designs. This awesome workshop did not disappoint; Sarah shared a wealth of great design tips and encouraged the group as we made such beautiful arrangements. I so enjoyed creating both a bouquet and boutonniere, and the finale styled photoshoot was the icing on the cake. It was such a fun, inspiring and educational afternoon, and I loved making new industry friends!

Boutique Owner's Baby Shower + Feature

Hey there sensational folks! Our summer has been super busy with weddings, soirees, spending time with loved ones and working on some exciting things we have coming up (stay tuned). However, we plan to get back in the swing of sharing inspiration, tips, features and more on our blog every week. We hope you'll join us for the fun!

We recently had the pleasure of styling the cutest gender-neutral baby shower for our good friend, Ericka Symonette, who runs a contemporary women's online clothing shop, Pulchritude Boutique. This fashionable wife and mom of 2 elementary school aged girls didn't want a traditional baby shower, but instead a fun "Come Back Kid" themed soiree to celebrate Baby #3 with her girlfriends. Gray and white chevron with a pop of yellow was the perfect color combo to set the scene of the private event space within D.C.'s Ebenezers Coffeehouse. With the addition of flowers, lemons, candles, and of course baby decor galore this shower definitely exuded lots of warmth and sunshine to reflect the excitement for new life. Here's a peek at some of the eye candy:

Cute, right?! We so enjoyed working on this shower and with the amazing shower hostesses. As mentioned prior, Ericka owns a women's clothing boutique, and their blog has an awesome summer series called Bravitude where they are featuring women who are bravely walking in their purpose. Guess who was featured apart of this inspiring series last Tuesday?! Yours truly, and what an honor! Check out the full interview here, and Pulchritude's website for fashion finds and style tips.

Hope the rest of your Tuesday is terrific! Tell us what you think about gender-neutral showers in the discussion section of this post.

Sensationally yours,

Shalyce
